This looks really cool, but sadly, when I try to use the patch all i get is red bars on the screen in zsnes 1.42 and snes9x 1.51 fairs no better. How can i get this patch to work? (I'm using freebsd.)

I'm not sure if the ZSNES version matters, but the latest is at zsnes.com

If you are applying the patch to the ROM, make sure you have ZSNES's auto-patching turned off (otherwise you'll end up applying the patch twice).

Also, make sure the ROM you are applying the patch over is a clean FF5 ROM that has already been patched with RPGe's v1.10 translation patch… I'm not entirely sure if this patch will work on a ROM with a 200 byte header, so try to get your hands on a headerless ROM.

Finally, maybe your patcher is gimped? I haven't heard of freebsd, but I tested the patch with IPS.EXE and had no issues.

I had to go through about a half a dozen ROMs before I could find one that I could patch at all without causing it to crash, and that one was buggy—i.e., in the intro, Lenna was "Gるl" instead of "girl"; two or three more ROM downloads later, I found one that works.

So far, though, the spoof is more than worth the effort it took to find a ROM that it works with. I particularly liked the bit about the pirate flag.

tl;dr version: If it don't work, download another ROM and try again until it does

Holy crap, I didn't expect to be seeing Bastard Son again.

FF5Spoof was built upon a verified clean dump of FF5 with no header… it looks like the most common ROM out there is totally different. I'll probably update the archive with another patch - one that works with a headered ROM.

Been almost a year, but I figured I might as well post an update to this thread. The ROM sites that exist now are totally different from the ones that existed a year ago, it seems, but I tested a couple from some of the bigger sites and they worked for me.
